    Todd McFarren, Esq., Convention Chair

2006 Summer Convention

CAAA's educational programs have a long tradition of excellence. Our seminars enjoy a national reputation for advanced advocacy. The June convention in Monterey stood squarely in that legacy of legal learning. We started with avoiding the Minotaur in the QME process (Borah, Swift, and Johnson). Next, we turned to the interpenetration of FEHA and WC (Cotrell, Edelstein, Hyams, and Stearns) and the role of legal theory in the medical-legal context. (Gearheart, Otis). From Basics (Chapman, Harris, Rucka) to Most Important Cases (Brown, Capurro, Feenberg, Herreras, Sliver) CAAA's intelligentsia took us from firm foundations to cutting edge interpretations of the latest case law. Advanced discovery techniques (Cohen, Tescher, Vickness), navigating the archipelago of apportionment (Grant, Rowen) and post award ethics (Meechan, Sweeney) deepen our lawyering skills and reminded us of the scope of  our duty to injured workers. Even Sunday morning brought a crowd to explore the network of compensable consequences (Rivers, Rondeau, and McFarren) and listen to the grandmasters reflect on the concept of total disability (Marcus, Martin, and McKenna). Don Green and the legislative panel provided members with political description, prescription, and prediction as to our cause in Sacramento.

As always, in addition to the hard work, there was plenty of merriment to go around. Family trips to the aquarium offered lifelong memories for kids and parents alike. The hip crowd bounced to the Blues Festival for some funky fun and our sporting troupes amused themselves with golf, tennis and running ("its own reward"-Bud).

In dark political times for injured workers, more than ever we must depend on each other and bring out the winter solider in each of us. Our conventions are the times we come together to learn and rally our political spirits. So "give us another horse and bind up our wounds.” See you in San Diego.
