California Applicants' Attorneys Association
Announces 2012-13 leadership team;
Coming year will focus on SB 863 Implementation

LOS ANGELES, CA - The California Applicants’ Attorneys Association (CAAA), whose members represent Californians injured on the job, today announced that it has installed a new president and team of officers for the coming year. Incoming CAAA President Larry Stern of Mallery & Stern, a Los Angeles firm specializing in fighting for the rights of California’s injured workers, said his priorities would  include implementation of, and education about, SB 863. “CAAA will lead efforts to ensure fair implementation of SB 863 through regulations and perhaps cleanup legislation. CAAA’s education program will be crucial to inform advocates for injured workers about the new law,” said Stern. “Just as CAAA led the fight to fix SB 863, which was partially successful, we will continue to fiercely advocate for fair treatment of Californians injured doing their jobs. We will work with extra diligence to make sure injured workers actually receive the promised increased permanent disability compensation, and to minimize harm from the flaws we see in the law. We look forward to working with the Brown Administration and all members of the workers’ compensation community during this crucial period. There are entire sections of SB 863 that were written at the last minute and are undefined. It will take a broad team effort to help make sure those provisions are implemented to the benefit of injured workers.”

Mr. Stern earned his law degree at Loyola University. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in zoology and a minor in biochemistry from the University of California at Berkeley. He also holds a Master of Science from the University of Southern California in molecular pharmacology.

Mr. Stern is a past president of the Southern California Applicants’ Attorneys Association. His past community activities include Judge Pro Tem of the Workers Compensation Appeals Board, Judge Pro Tem of Los Angeles Municipal Court, Panel Member of the Beverly Hills Bar Association for Attorney Fee Dispute matters and Court Appointed Arbitrator in Personal Injury and Product Liability matters.

CAAA’s elected leaders for 2012-2013 also include: Brad Chalk, Esq., Legislative Chair; Jim Butler, Esq., President-Elect; Bernardo de la Torre, Esq., Treasurer; and, Bert Arnold of Boxer & Gerson, Esq., Secretary.

CAAA honored outgoing president Brad Chalk for his tireless work over the past year. “Brad personifies the best of CAAA,” said Stern. “He volunteered over thousands of hours and led us through a critical period of change with a new Administration and new lawmaking. CAAA, because of Brad’s leadership and the talented team he assembled for that fight, a team that spent hundreds of hours analyzing the legislation and advocating for improvements before its passage, is now in a very strong position to advocate for injured workers under SB 863 – and inform other advocates about its strengths and flaws.”
