IMR Podcast

CAAA has been a leader in workers’ compensation education for over forty years.  In the coming year, the association is aiming to distribute some its fine educational offerings in alternative digital formats, including podcasts and webinars.   This is the second podcast released, and we are offering it free to the workers’ compensation community.

As of July 1, 2013, every dispute over a utilization review (UR) decision regarding medical treatment for a work injury must now be resolved by Independent Medical Review – IMR.

But, as with any new program, many of us have more questions than answers. What do we do when we get a UR decision? How long do we have to act? What if the UR decision is late? Can we submit more evidence with an IMR appeal? What happens if the IMR review finds the treatment was necessary? Or, does it agree with the UR determination?

To answer these and many other questions, CAAA has now issued three of four planned Practice Tips on the new UR/IMR process.  For more IMR Materials from CAAA click the button Read More

Register today for our live seminar event: IMR Intensive on September 21st.

This podcast was made from a panel on IMR Review recorded at CAAA's 2013 Summer Convention. The program was 1.5 hours long and we have reduced it to 35 minutes and put it in an audio file that you can listen to in the car or at work. The presenters discuss: what to do when you get a UR non-certication letter; the Code of Regulations sections that pertain to IMR and what to do when you get the IMR application from the claims adjuster; what the Administrative Director does when an IMR application is received; the requirements of Labor Code Section 4610.5, and specifically what the claims adjuster must send to Maximus once the AD sends the matter to them and when the claims adjuster must send it; the different rules between expedited review and regular review; the cost of the IMR system to insurance carriers; and the Medical Utilization Review Schedule (MTUS) that is the basis for UR and IMR review.
