Injured Workers' Advocates Release Graph: Medical Care and Disability Compensation NOT Driving Workers' Compensation Cost Increases

SACRAMENTO, CA - The California Applicants' Attorneys Association (CAAA), whose members represent Californians injured on the job, today released a chart showing that payments for injured workers' medical care and disability compensation are NOT the costs driving increases in the system.

"The chart, based on the insurance industry's own research, shows that there has been virtually no growth in benefits paid to injured workers over the past several years," said CAAA President Brad Chalk. "In view of the recent approval of an increase in insurance pure premiums, some have expressed concerns that system costs are rising, but this graph shows that any cost increases are not from rising benefit payments. Instead, as shown in other WCIRB research, the cost drivers in the system are insurer expense costs such as cost containment expenses."
