The CAAA PAC has identified and begun raising money to support a new cadre of worker advocates... and they are all women.
Aisha Wahab is running for the State Senate in the Bay Area. The daughter of Afghan refugees, Aisha’s father was murdered, and she was orphaned. Today, Aisha is a fierce advocate for working families with a deep commitment and long history of fighting for them. She is endorsed by labor, the Democratic Party and CAAA.
Liz Ortega is running for State Assembly in Alameda County. Liz is an immigrant and the elected leader of the Alameda County Labor Council. During the pandemic, Liz led the fight to force Tesla to help workers protect themselves from COVID. And Liz won hazard pay for grocery workers in more cities than anyone else.
Esther Portillo is running for the Assembly in Riverside County. As a very young woman, Esther was a tenants’ rights organizer. She then became a founder of the Warehouse Workers Resource Center in the Inland Empire.
Tough. Smart. Committed. More than a friend to injured workers... a champion.
Pilar Shiavo will flip the Assembly seat in the Santa Clarita Valley from Republican to Democrat... because she is an organizer. Pilar worked with both UNITE HERE’s hotel workers and SEIU’s workers. For 13 years, Pilar has worked for the California Nurses Association. And no one knows more about getting injured on the job than nurses do.
These four women can win this year. They will join Senators Maria Elena Durazo and Monique Limon and Assembly Majority Leader Eloise Reyes as champions for injured workers.
The future is female. And it’s brighter.
