A Message from Sandy Rocca, Esq.
President

As the current California Applicants’ Attorneys Association President, I was saddened to hear about the loss of Jettie Pierce Selvig and Reuben Lucero this past week. As a Latina lawyer, I am so inspired by the work both Jettie and Reuben did for their clients and the workers’ compensation community.

Jettie Pierce Selvig was a past president of CAAA , serving from 1981-1982, in the early years of the organization. She is described by CAAA Executive Director, Diane Worley, as “a trailblazing advocate for workers and women.” Her obituary remembers her as “One of the finest lawyers in her field of supporting injured workers, championing equal rights for all and holding many executive positions in state and national organizations. All this while being a wife and raising three boys.” While I did not personally know Jettie, I have no doubt her work and dedication helped provide a foundation for the success of our organization today.

Reuben Lucero was an active CAAA Latino Caucus member, former Board of Directors member and recipient of the 2019 President’s Award. I truly enjoyed working with Reuben during committee calls, Lobby Day, Board of Directors’ meetings and educational events. He spoke so passionately about protecting his clients’ rights and providing zealous representation in a difficult system. His ideas and contributions helped newer lawyers become better advocates to help injured workers. I think our Executive Director, Diane Worley, speaks for all of us when she says “I already miss greatly his smile whenever he greeted me.”

As leaders in our organization, their contributions will always be deeply appreciated. I hope we can all follow in their hardworking footsteps and carry on their legacy of leadership.

A celebration of life for Jettie Pierce Selvig was held at her residence in Mill Valley this past Saturday May 14, 2022. More information on her life can be found by following this link - click for more information
